JOB SUMMARY

The Director, Patient Safety & High Reliability provides leadership in the successful implementation of an organization-wide patient safety framework, with will be based heavily on principles associated with high reliability. The Director will build an infrastructure that will support sustainable and scalable capabilities throughout the NCH Healthcare System that also incorporate human factors thinking, lean six sigma and systems theory. Promoting a culture that places patient safety first and is considered both “fair and just” will be the primary goal. The Director will report to the Executive Director for Quality and Patient Safety and have responsibility for a staff of safety/quality and lean six sigma specialists and coordinators.

The Director will perform this role by: promoting and educating staff to NCH safety and error proofing behaviors promoting and incorporating reinforcing mechanisms to hardwire these behaviors through leader expectations and peer accountabilities classifying events, working with the Director of Risk Management, as preventable or not while concurrently promoting the capture of events considered near misses and precursors events working with staff and teams to not only make care safer but also more efficient through the elimination of waste and unwanted variation.

In this role, she/he will ensure that comprehensive work plans, and roadmaps are established to govern the execution of patient safety initiatives and the right methodologies are leveraged throughout the initiative implementation. Director will ensure people, process, technology, and quality are effectively integrated, and the right metrics and dashboards are leveraged to track success. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

·Responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation with Patient Safety.

·Work to align patient safety improvement initiatives to ensure the organization and strategic direction is supported by the operational initiatives planned and underway.

·Provide the necessary plan and leadership to promote a culture of safety throughout NCH, leading to the elimination of all preventable patient harm.

·Provide change leadership and lead cross-functional projects to drive standardization, stability, and simplification in processes across critical business initiatives.

·Promotes waste and variation reduction working to obtain critical support and resources and ensure that improvement projects are implemented and adequately funded.

·Identify opportunities for business or process improvement; makes associated recommendations as appropriate and deploys relevant systems and tools to support this process improvement culture.

·Manage a portfolio of improvement initiatives. Create and manage KPIs and provide timely reporting of same.

·Act as a thought leader and promote the achievements of patient safety, at NCH.

·Incorporate lessons learned, from other fields of study and industries, into the implementation of safety and high reliability practices.

    EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

    · Minimum of Bachelor’s Degree required in business or health related field; Master’s Degree preferred. Clinical Experience a plus.

    · Minimum of 10 years of experience in a healthcare setting with knowledge and experience in patient safety; Minimum of 5 years in a supervisory role strongly preferred.

    · Certification in Patient Safety required or must be obtained within the first year of being hired.

    · Green Belt or higher certification or equivalent Lean certification preferred.

    · Project management knowledge preferred.

    · Proven capability of working in a fast-paced environment and leading highly complex yet rewarding continuous improvement projects.

    · Demonstrate the ability to closely partner with and influence stakeholders, at all levels, on projects.

    · Manage multiple work streams, create workable work stream plans, and execute on such plans.

    · Demonstrated ability collaborating with subject matter experts in clinical, business and technology roles.

    · A highly effective communicator at all levels within large organizations.

    · Leadership presence and the ability to manage and lead change.

    · Driven to deliver quality results on time and based on established expectations.

    · Willing and able to work in a matrix environment and value the importance of teamwork.

    · High level of proficiency in MS Excel, PowerPoint, and other Office applications skills a must.

    · Experience making a compelling case for patient safety and leading transformational initiatives in a dynamic organization.

    · To be successful, this individual must be a change agent, leverage his/her knowledge and experience in defining and executing transformational initiatives, and provide a unifying methodology for the execution of those initiatives. Above all this position serves to exceed the expectation of patients and all other customers we serve.

    · Intermediate computer knowledge: Uses Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Windows.
