JOB SUMMARY

The Cardiovascular Research Fellow is a full-time position offered by the NCH Rooney Heart Institute for individuals interested in pursuing additional experience in clinical research. As a full-time job the research fellow is expected to work during normal working hours Monday-Friday 8am-5pm. The research fellow will be provided with a workspace and resources necessary to conduct clinical research. They will work directly with the other members of the Research Team, clinical cardiology fellows, and other Clinical Leaders of the Heart Institute, including physicians, nurses, and departmental support staff.

The Research Fellow will utilize medical knowledge and skills to establish and execute clinical research organizational tasks accurately and professionally. Study projects may involve in-patient and outpatient clinical settings, case series, review articles, retrospective and/or prospective analysis, meta-analysis among others. The Research Fellow will learn to draft and execute clinical protocol in support of clinician mentors from the Heart Institute to assure all required steps have been completed and performed in the correct order and method. The research fellow will be expected to abstract and analyze data, including manuscript elaborate and publication of study results in peer-review journals, including participation in major national meetings. There will be opportunities for professional growth as a mentor and advocate of research. Collaboration with other NCH departments and staff, to advance understanding of research, engage in philanthropic projects and community outreach.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

– Other duties may be assigned.

· Participates in the development, oversight, and execution of the research projects of NCH Research Institute.

· Elaboration of study protocols including IRB approval process.

· Acts as a sub-investigator or principal investigator on research projects.

· Participates in daily research tasks, clinical, administrative, regulatory, and data collection/abstraction.

· Resolves problems that obstruct successful outcomes and project efficiency.

· Works with the Research team to actualize the collection of high-quality data within established timelines.

· Responsible for manuscript analysis, elaboration, and publication.

· Serves as a representative of the NCHRI from within the organization and the greater Naples community.

· Performs as a research team leader.

· Mentors’ colleagues with less experience in research techniques

· Supervises the work of others in various research projects.

· Delivers presentations related to specific trials, projects, or programs, enhancing the growth and awareness of NCHRI.

· Works with the clinical team as it relates to research activities and the advancement of clinical trials.

· Assists with identifying eligible patients and screening tasks related to each enrolling trial.

· Educates healthcare providers on active research trials and patient entry criteria.

· Participates in patient consenting, enhancing patient understanding and education.

· Provides support to the research team when events occur that are best resolved with advanced medical knowledge.

· Engages in professional development through publications, abstracts, presentations at National Meetings, and professional educational programs.

· Assesses, interprets, and evaluates research outcomes.

· Develops ideas for application of research outcomes.

· Contributes to knowledge generation, knowledge exchange, and knowledge transfer activities.

· Works with philanthropic and leadership teams to generate financial support and community loyalty to the mission and vision of NCHRI.

· Communicates special achievements of NCH Rooney Heart Institute, patient stories, and leading-edge treatment options, working to share information in a manner that is clear and engages the listener or information recipient.

· Advocates for research among physicians, nursing, hospital leadership as well as community members and grateful patients.  

    EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

    · Minimum of MD or equivalent with relevant understanding of Research.

    · Possesses sufficient knowledge in cardiovascular therapies.

    · Experience and/or interest in Clinical Research Trials and working with research teams.

    · Excellent communication skills (both written and verbal).

    · Undergraduate teaching experience and acquired skills that can be tailored to other physicians, research colleagues, and patients, respectively.

    · Intermediate computer knowledge: Uses Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Windows.
