JOB SUMMARY
The Manager Sterile Processing reports to the Director of Sterile Processing. Under general supervision of the department Director, the Manager Sterile Processing coordinates and manages the daily activities and operational needs of the department. This position assists the Director with the overall direction, leadership, and supervision of the staff. This role performs instrument production, case assembly, sterile processing, decontamination of surgical instruments in compliance with medical center policies and procedures, state, local, and federal requirements. This position serves as SPD liaison with other departments. The Manager Sterile Processing monitors and participates in quality initiatives and assists with accomplishing organizational and department goals/objectives.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
– Other duties may be assigned.
· Ability to perform and teach technician duties.
· Maintains monthly staffing schedule and rotates staff assignments to keep proficient in all areas.
· Checks future schedules for equipment/instrument needs and obtains in a timely manner.
· Assists SPD staff when needed by demands of the OR schedule. Helps in all areas to assure instrument needs are met.
· Manages duties as assigned by OR Assistant Director/Director of Surgical Services.
· Maintains adequate inventory levels in all areas of the SPD.
· Restocks supplies in the department as needed, this may include IV fluids
· Actively assists and supports departmental activities to ensure that operational and salary expenses are equal to or less than approved budget.
· Understands the principles and concepts of Performance Improvement. Looks for opportunities and solutions for process improvements and seeks to improve job skills.
· Maintains the principles of confidentiality and HIPPA. Understands the legal/regulatory requirements related to the release of information. Able to use the information systems pertinent to the job. (O)
· Interviews and hires new applicants in sterile processing.
· Coaching and corrective action as per hospital policies in sterile processing.
· Holds employees accountable for quality of work and productivity.
· IUSS rates and statistical data as requested monthly
· Able to access Epic and print preference cards for sterile processing staff to use to pick cases.
· Responsible for appropriate record keeping and sterilization records per regulatory compliance.
· Keeps the department prepared for regulatory agency inspections i.e.: AHCA, OSHA, and Joint Commission.
· Completes 90-day and annual appraisals in Performance Manager for all SPD employees.
· Evaluates skills and maintains annual skills checklist for all SPD employees.
· Holds and maintains national certification in sterile processing.
· Clear understanding of all SPD computer programs.
· Clear understanding of inter and intradepartmental transfer of information.
· Positive and effective interaction skills through verbal and nonverbal communication with all contacts.
· Provides feedback regarding problems and complaints and offers constructive suggestions.
· Takes active role in problem solving and conflict resolution in unit.
· Communicates with nursing management in regard to staffing, incidents or unresolved problems.
· Informs nursing management of pertinent situations and relays actions taken towards resolution.
· Has staff meetings regularly and keeps minutes.
· Conducts both annual and ongoing in-service education programs to maintain competencies and keep staff aware of unit changes
· Supervise staff in correct handling, packaging and storage with regard to sterilization.
· Assists Operating Room with instrumentation need for future scheduled procedures.
· Position is responsible for Sterile Processing at both hospital campuses.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
· High School Diploma or GED required, associate degree or bachelor’s degree preferred.
· National Certification for CHL is required or must be obtained within 6 months.
· A minimum of one year in a supervisory position.
· Two years of experience in Sterile Processing and a completion of sterile processing program.
· National Certification in sterile processing (CBSPDT or CRCST) required.
· Intermediate computer knowledge: Uses Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Windows
