Orthopedic Telemetry Department is a 32 bed unit at our Downtown Baker campus that provides care to a wide range of orthopedic surgeries as well as patients undergoing elective total joint replacement. The nursing care consists of post op care, pain management and care transitions to home/rehabilitation centers.

JOB SUMMARY

The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) is responsible for providing direct nursing care following established standards of care, policy, and procedures. The LPN provides nursing care to assigned patients under the direct supervision of the registered nurse (RN) or other assigned supervisor and accepts delegation from the RN/assigned supervisor in meeting the needs of the patient/family. The LPN collects data through observation and communicates information to assist the RN and/or provider in patient assessment and care planning. The LPN delivers care in accordance with the patient care plan, policies and procedures of the organization and principles of relationship-based care. The LPN possesses excellent communication skills; is skillful in mentoring and instructing; and may participate on committees or projects, including quality improvement projects.

This role is a team delivery component and at no time shall the LPN be solely responsible for patient care delivery. The assignment shall be coordinated by the RN/UTL and not divided into separate assignments. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Other duties may be assigned.

· Fulfills patient care responsibilities as assigned by the Registered Nurse.

· Observes, records and reports patient’s conditions, medical history, allergies, medication history and reactions to treatments as appropriate to RN and provider.

· Assist with patient ADL’s, mobility, transfers, dressing changes, specimen collection, etc.

· Utilizes the nursing process to provide patient care as directed by provider and Registered Nurse.

· Completes timely and accurate documentation of nursing interventions in patient charts; relaying information & instructions to patient/family.

· Demonstrates knowledge of safe medication administration; administers prescribed medications and treatments in accordance with nursing standards.

· Collection and handling of lab specimens following established standards and practices.

· Adheres to infection control safety guidelines, maintaining equipment, instruments, and stock supplies.

· Employs patient teaching to promote health and safety.

· Practices ethically.

· Communicates effectively in all areas of practice.

· Collaborates with the patient, their family/significant other and the inter-disciplinary team.

    EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

    · Minimum of High School or GED required.

    · Licensed as Licensed Practical Nurse in the State of Florida.

    · Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required from the American Red Cross or American Heart Association.

    · Excellent verbal and written communication skills with ability to effectively articulate and explain required information to patients.

    · Must have an approved IV certification or agree to complete an NCH approved program within 90 days of hire. IV competency will be validated upon hire and/or completion of the NCH approved program.

    · Intermediate computer knowledge: Uses Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Windows.
