JOB SUMMARY
Performs newborn hearing screening and documents the results accurately and timely, as mandated by the State of Florida. In addition, the Newborn Hearing Screener Lead also acts as the trainer for other hearing screeners, assists with scheduling the hearing screening team, and oversees compliance of reporting results to the state.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

· Performs newborn hearing screenings using automated auditory brainstem response (AABR) screening device.
· Trains all new screeners and completes annual competencies on current trainers to ensure consistency and accuracy.
· Under the direction of leadership, facilitates delivery of results to the state as required to remain compliant.
· Ensures an appropriate stock of state-provided informational materials and orders additional materials as needed.
· Ensures all newborns are screened prior to discharge.
· Explains the hearing screening procedures to parents and guardians prior to screening.
· Communicates hearing screening results and recommendations to parents or guardians.
· Provides state-approved Newborn Hearing Screening informational pamphlets to parents or guardians.
· Uploads and/or documents the hearing screening results in Epic EMR upon completion of the test.
· Reports results in the web-based reporting system, eReports, within 24 hours for Neonatal ICU patients and within 7-10 days for Mom & Baby patients.
· Conducts one (1) rescreen on Mom & Baby patients if either ear fails the first screening.
· Cleans the screening device after each screening in accordance with manufacturer recommendations.
· Assists in the training of new-hire Newborn Hearing Screeners.
· Reports to the Medical Director for Newborn Hearing Screening and the Nursing Directors for NICU and Mom & Baby.
· Follows NCH protocol related to security and identification of infants.
· Follows NCH infection control, safety awareness, hospital and departmental policies, guidelines, and standards of work.
· Recognizes potential problems within hearing screening service delivery and obtains assistance when necessary.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
· Minimum of High School Education or GED.
· Minimum of one (1) year experience as a Newborn Hearing Screener.
· Experience with infants preferred.
· Computer proficiency and ability to perform accurate data entry.
· Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required from the American Red Cross or American Heart Association.
· Flexibility to work on weekends and national holidays required.
· Certificate of Completion from the online training course for hearing screeners from the National Center for Hearing Assessment and Management (NCHAM), Utah State University, as required by the Florida Department of Health. On the job, equipment-specific training to be conducted after hire.
