JOB SUMMARY
The Histology Lab Assistant is responsible for picking up and accessioning specimens with a unique departmental identification. This position includes making, filing and disposal of cassettes, slides and wet tissues. Histology lab assistants will assist the Pathologist as they perform bone marrow biopsies, Fine needle aspirates (FNA’s), prepare CytoSpin slides and prepare cell blocks. Any person who holds this position will also have knowledge of dealing with flammable chemicals, hazardous chemicals and biomedical waste pertaining to storage, recycling and disposal of such materials.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Other duties may be assigned.
· Accessions Histology and Cytology specimens with a high degree of accuracy.
· Disposes of retained patient materials according to protocol.
· Maintains patient blocked material, slides and retained (wet) materials in an organized manner.
· Able to recycle reagents: alcohol, xylene and formalin if needed.
· Clean/changes staining lines, processors, cover slipper and cryostats with a high degree of accuracy. Logs data onto QC sheets.
· Assist Pathologist with bone marrow and FNA procedures.
· Prepares and stains cytology slides using the cyto-spin method.
· Understands and uses appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for specified task.
· Maintains patient confidentiality. Abiding with all regulatory guidelines related to release of information.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
· Minimum of High School or GED required.
· Basic computer knowledge: ability to operate a PC, create/save/print documents, input data.
