JOB SUMMARY
The Medical Assistant is responsible for providing basic care to patients following established standards and practices.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Other duties may be assigned.
· Fulfills patient care responsibilities as assigned, which may include checking schedules and organizing patient flow.
· Escorting patients to exam/procedure rooms. Observes, records and reports patient observations and reactions to drugs and treatments to providers.
· Assisting patients as needed with walking, transfers, dressing, collecting specimens, preparing for exam, etc.
· Collecting patient history including current medications, allergies, symptoms, etc.
· Provide patient care as directed by the provider; this may include screenings, treatments in accordance with established standards.
· Assisting providers with various procedures as needed.
· Documents in the Electronic Medical Record and relays information/instructions to patient/family. Documents all interventions, phone calls, patient/family responses, medication dispensed or prescribed, hospital data.
· Answering patient phone calls and messages, acting as a communication liaison between the patient and provider.
· Fulfills clerical responsibilities as assigned which may include filing or sending medical records to a patient or referral provider, appointment scheduling.
· Collection and handling of lab specimens following established standards and practices. Adhere to infection control safety guidelines, maintaining equipment, instruments, and stock supplies.
· Utilizes electronic referrals process to complete requested physician referrals to NCHMD specialists and ancillary services.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
· Minimum of High School or GED required.
· Completion of Medical Assistant or practical nursing training program with documented clinical practicum hours; OR Medical Assistant certification; OR a minimum of one-year experience in medical office setting as a Medical Assistant or like role.
· Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required from the American Red Cross or American Heart Association.
· Verified ability to take accurate patient vital signs.
· Excellent verbal and written communication skills with ability to effectively articulate and explain required information to patients.
· Knowledge of CPT and ICD9 codes.
· Intermediate computer knowledge: Uses Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Windows
· Knowledge of basic and specialty specific medical terminology.
· Capable of working under pressure in a fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions while maintaining a professional demeanor and control.
