JOB SUMMARY
The Behavioral Health Specialist is a non-treating provider who provides comprehensive behavioral health services to patients and their families in the hospital setting of all NCH campuses. They will evaluate the patient and situation providing resources and assistance with accessing clinical and supportive care services. This role involves assessing, planning, and implementing care for patients with mental health and substance use disorders, including those under the Florida Marchman Act and Baker Act. The Behavioral Health Specialist collaborates with the healthcare team, patients, and families to ensure continuity of care and facilitate access to necessary resources.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

· Marchman Act and Baker Act:
· Complete and submit necessary documentation and legal paperwork for involuntary admissions under the Florida Marchman Act (substance use disorders) and Baker Act (mental health crisis).
· Collaborate with law enforcement, legal representatives, and other relevant agencies to ensure compliance with state laws and regulations.
· Provide patients and their families with information about the Marchman Act and Baker Act processes, patient rights, and responsibilities.
· Assess patient’s mental health, substance use, and psychosocial needs.
· Collaborates with the RN Case Manager and Social Worker to ensure effective, timely discharge.
· In collaboration with the healthcare team, focusing on addressing behavioral health issues and promoting overall well-being.
· Offer emotional support to patients and their families experiencing mental health or substance use crises.
· Facilitate referrals to community resources, outpatient services, and specialized treatment programs.
· Ensure seamless transitions between levels of care, such as from hospital to outpatient treatment or residential programs.
· Develop and keep current a comprehensive listing of vetted area behavioral health providers.
· Develop a relationship with local mental health centers and providers.
· Serve as an essential link between patients, families, and all other care providers.
· Responsible for outreach efforts to establish and maintain positive working relationships with physicians, social services staff, and the broader health community.
· Encourage patients to have a stable and regular relationship with a primary care provider and their mental health provider/s.
· Assist in increasing access to high quality, culturally competent care through stable insurance coverage, transportation, and other needed social supports.
· Facilitate communication and follow-up with health care providers.
· Participate in the ongoing development and review of the program.
· Participate in the collection and analysis of outcomes data. Collaborate with Pediatric Behavioral Health Navigator on any pediatric cases.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
· Bachelor’s degree in social work, Psychology, Counseling, or a related field required; Master’s degree preferred.
· Certification in behavioral health, substance use counseling, or a related field is desirable.
· Minimum of 2 years of experience in behavioral health, preferably in a hospital or healthcare setting.
· Experience with crisis intervention, care coordination, and working with involuntary treatment processes under the Marchman Act and Baker Act.
